Lëtz Create – Valérie Conrot

Each month, Miranda van den Heuvel talks to creative people in Luxembourg and says “look, Luxembourg is creative! Here’s how and where!” The April talk is with la denicheuse”, Valérie Conrot.

1. What is CREATIVITY?

Creativity is the gift or the capacity to make a rather ordinary thing or idea extraordinary. It is to add a touch of originality, freshness or novelty to it, the little something that makes all the difference.

2. How are you creative?

Valérie Conrot

I always wanted to discover, observe and look behind things, and to let myself be enthralled by an object. Ever since I was a child, I notice – and love – things that make me ask questions, that make me laugh and that make life happier. I’m attracted to such things quite simply.

Three years ago, I decided to turn my passion into a job, and I started my online boutique www.denicheuse.com. It has a very personal selection of my favourites, my coups de coeur. I hunt out designers and creative people, and share their creations with my visitors and clients. When making my selection, I follow my heart and my instinct as to what I find creative and original.

3.  Suggest a simple creative activity to our readers that can make them more creative

Go out for a walk, keep your eyes wide open and be receptive. Let yourself be invaded by the colours, the matters, the noises, the smells and the motives that surround you.

Make sure you really see what’s around you, take the time to take it in, find out what touches you, what seduces you. Look closely at things; a wild flower pushing up from a crack in the pavement, a leaf dancing in the air, the beauty in a bird’s song…let yourself be carried away by your imagination and your dreams, like when you were a child…

A wonderful world might open up to you if you do, we just have to take the time sometimes to seize what’s around us and take it home, as a memory or the create something with. Inspiration is all around us.

4. What are your top 3 websites for creative inspiration?

Only three? I spend my days on the Internet, reading blogs, newsletters, design sites… so it’s difficult to include only three.

http://pinterest.com/  I love to pin my favourites, I use it as a notebook and I also find very pretty things there.

http://www.designrulz.com/ I often discover things that make me dream here.

www.facebook.com: It’s often on Facebook that I reach young designers.

5. What are your 3 tips to become more creative in Luxembourg?

  1. What’s best for creative people is to “confront” others – in Luxembourg and abroad – at trade fairs, expositions and conferences, to look, learn and exchange ideas.

There are many very talented people in Luxembourg, and these days also many meeting places for creative people, and that’s important: Carré Rotondes, Mudam, Casino Luxembourg, Designfriends, TedX, to name some.

In Luxembourg, there has been an explosion of creative people in the last few years, in every field, and that is so great. I don’t know why – perhaps new technologies making it easier, more courage and acknowledgements, more possibilities for artistic and creative education…

  1. If you want to achieve something, you sometimes have to dare to be on less safe ground and take risks, and fortunately more and more creative people do that. Lately there are constantly new names to discover, in art, design, fashion, graphic art, music… and I’m so happy about that. And it has to stay that way!

Have the courage to go for it! If you have an idea, at a certain point you have to dare to go for it, talk about it, show it…

  1. Luxembourg is such a multicultural and multilingual country, and we sometimes underestimate what an incredible possibility that is. We can travel, and speak several languages. We can choose to study abroad, resulting in creative people coming from very different schools and educations, with different experiences. Some come back to Luxembourg, some stay abroad. This richness and openness is extremely important and interesting. And also quite unique.

We have to stop saying that nothing happens in Luxembourg, that’s wrong! Luxembourg is really opening up creatively – so please, continue to sow ideas!

6. What’s your suggestion to make Luxembourg a more creative, innovative place?

Dare to be original! Don’t be afraid of what other people think. Believe in yourself and go for it!

7. Who, in Luxembourg, should we interview next?

Stephanie Rollin, http://www.super-ette.com/

Max Steffen http://maxsteffen.com/work/

8.  Anything you’d like to add?

 Cultivate difference!
