Lëtz Create – Lisa Fuchs

Each month, Miranda van den Heuvel talks to creative people in Luxembourg and says “look, Luxembourg is creative! Here’s how and where!” The May talk is with creative cook / cake maker Lisa Fuchs.

1. What is CREATIVITY?

Creativity is using your fantasy and imagination, and trusting your abilities. As we grow up, it seems a lot of people are afraid of failing and therefore they are afraid of using the ideas they might have to make something. But if we never fail – we will never succeed. Creativity is to let go of those fears and just do it! It doesn’t have to be spectacular.

2. How are you creative?

lisafuchsI do a lot of things I “can’t do”. I sew for fun. I might have an idea for a pillowcase or a handbag, and I just do it without much thinking. I make jewelry and let myself get inspired by the clothes I wear or pictures I’ve seen. I love taking photos and I always hear my art teacher’s voice in my head – “look for an unusual angle”. But most of all these days, I cook and bake with a whole lot of creativity. And after much encouraging from friends and family I started to share the recipes I create, on a blog called Liesel at Home. The amazing thing with internet is how you can reach people you would never get in contact with otherwise.

3.  Suggest a simple creative activity to our readers that can make them more creative

The kitchen is the perfect place for creativity. Say that you make scrambled eggs every morning – start putting different spices into it every day for a whole week. You might eventually find a new favorite! Or start switching out ingredients when cooking – for example make a “potato gratin” using carrots instead of potatoes. Don’t be afraid to “fail” – just let your imagination run!

4. What are your top 3 websites for creative inspiration?

www.flickr.com  – for photos

www.becomingminimalist.com – for everyday inspiration to a positive lifestyle. A clutter free home certainly helps creativity flow!

www.pinterest.com – that one is pretty obvious….

5. What are your 3 tips to become more creative in Luxembourg?

Luxembourg has amazing nature. Going on a hike is the perfect creative activity. We always bring a camera each and my husband and I tend to have competitions over who took the best picture of the day. He is the man behind www.fuchs-photography.com – so I have some serious competition there!  You can also just hike, and listen to the nature or get inspired by the colors. The intense green moss in this region amazes me every time.

Join a club, like the British Ladies Club – and go to their creative gatherings. I go to a jewelry-making group there and it is very inspiring to meet others with the same interest.

Visit the historical places of Luxembourg, and read the information available everywhere on signs and in the museums. History always inspires me to create.

6. What’s your suggestion to make Luxembourg a more creative, innovative place?

I would like easier access to information on all the events that take place here. Often the information is in French and way too often I find out about it too late. So once again – it’s a case of language barriers. Not easy to solve though. And on the other hand, having all these languages does make us creative…

7. Who, in Luxembourg, should we interview next?

I would suggest Julie Tyrrell – a wonderful Irish artist living in Luxembourg. See www.julietyrrell.com

8.  Anything you’d like to add?

I used to run painting classes when we lived in Munich a few years back. One of the participants had a complicated medical history with a lot of stress related problems. When she started going to my classes, her health got better. Her doctor said to her: “what ever you are doing – keep doing it!”  Creativity is good for us. It relaxes us and can even make us healthy – so go create something!
