Let’s hear it for Portugal!

Portugal Day is officially known as “Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portugese Communities” and it is celebrated annually on 10th June.

This day commemorates the death of national icon Luís Vaz de Camões on 10th June 1580. Camões wrote Os Lusíadas, an epic poem celebrating Portuguese history and achievements, mainly through the Portuguese explorations, which brought fame and fortune to the country.

For most people, it’s a day to relax and have a good time with family and friends, and enjoy a good meal together – like a bacalhau.

My favourite recipe to share with you all would be “Bacalhau com Broa” (cod with potatoes, eggs and crispy bread crumbs). Very easy to make, with simple ingredients, the secret is using the right bread for the bread crumbs. You should use “Broa de Milho”, which is basically a very rich corn flour bread. This bread can be easily found at Primavera Supermarkets or at Auchan during the Portuguese week promotions (there are several throughout the year). Here’s the recipe.
