“Be careful not to over whip the cream or you’ll end up with butter!” Ever heard that phrase? I have, and I’ve certainly told my kids enough times. Now – what if we actually do “over whip” that cream today?
Let’s make delicious home made butter!
This is a fun little experiment that will not only fascinate kids (and grown-ups!) but it is also pretty impressive to be able to put home-made butter on the table. If you’re a bread lover, I can’t imagine anything better to go with that fresh bread. In my family the butter ends up on steaks, fish, or even better – on cooked vegetables.
- A bowl and a hand mixer (electrical whip)
- 250 ml (1 cup) full fat cream
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- and optionally herbs, spices and / or garlic
It takes about 5 minutes to make butter and this is how you do it:
- Pour the cream into the bowl
- Add salt and possibly herbs / spices
- Start whipping – and keep whipping
The cream will go from fluid, to creamy, to very creamy and then for a long time nothing really happens. Just keep whipping! Eventually the cream will turn grainy and soon you’ll see that a fluid separates from the grains.
When the fluid appears, take a spoon and press the grainy stuff to the side and try to get as much fluid out as possible. Empty out the fluid and press a bit more. You will finally end up with smooth butter. Either roll this into a bit of parchment paper or keep in a small glass or bowl. Store in the fridge.
I have made three different versions the last days:
One was cream, salt and 2 teaspoons dill.
One was cream, salt, ¼ teaspoon chili powder, ¼ teaspoon dried paprika and some chopped fresh parsley.
And lastly a garlic version with half a clove chopped garlic and about a tablespoon chopped fresh parsley.
All three turned out great! Next I will try black pepper and lemon zest…. Yum!
