Lëtz Create – Mea Bateman

Each month, Miranda van den Heuvel talks to creative people in Luxembourg and says “look, Luxembourg is creative! Here’s how and where!” The October talk is with artist Mea Bateman.

1. What is CREATIVITY?

For me creativity is about letting my imagination run free, giving my curiosity plenty of space, and not being afraid to try new things.

2. How are you creative?

Mea BatemanAs an artist, I work alongside the ‘Fleegestatioun’ situated in Dudelange who does wonderful work rescuing wildlife. This inspires me to create pieces featuring these animals, and then being able to support this great cause by selling my pieces. You might have seen Rafi the fox, the Rock-a-Field mascot 2014, who is one such creature. This year I hope to be producing Christmas cards to help raise funds. Looking forward to producing a ‘Festive Fox’! My favourite medium is pen&ink with watercolour. In addition I’ve discovered an engraving course which has huge potential.

I am also creating a blog which should be up and running very shortly. For the moment my work can be found on www.facebook.com/meabateman.art. Or if you take a stroll along the Mosel, and pop into the Schengen Tourist Office, you will come across one or two of my  pieces on display.

3.  Suggest a simple creative activity to our readers that can make them more creative

Sometimes you may need to ponder in silence . I like to do this whilst walking my favourite places; along the Mosel or the lakes of Remerschen, or up in the Vineyards, picking up feathers and other treasures which I use for inspiration.

At other times, music is great for inspiration. The  Rolling Stones or The Beatles will do it for me every time. Visiting museums and exhibitions is always a good idea, other artists’ work is very often great inspiration.

Everyone is different andevery day is unique – enjoy the journey, have a blast!

4. What are your top 3 websites for creative inspiration?

I’m a bit of a ‘Googler’, and very often just typing in a single word provides avenues of ideas undreamed of. I am naturally curious, so I have to be strict with myself, or I can easily spend far too much time meandering through blogs and websites, intrigued and delighted with what I find, and thirsty for more.

5. What are your 3 tips to become more creative in Luxembourg?

No magic 3, but I am convinced that the very best thing is to let your curiosity become the better of you. Stroll around the beautiful countryside, venture down side streets, poke around ‘flea markets’, brace yourself, and enter into a “snooty gallery” like you own it! Sit on a terrace and watch, dream, plan. Enjoy!

6. What’s your suggestion to make Luxembourg a more creative, innovative place?

Get involved!

7.  Anything you’d like to add?

“ I am always doing that which I cannot do in order that I may learn how to do it” – Pablo Picasso

Fear kills creativity, jump in, don’t be afraid!
