The name alone is enough to join the Optimist Maidens – who happen to be a cricket club!
Established in Walferdange in 1993, The Optimist Maidens Cricket Club (OMCC) is a women’s cricket club, from age 15 and up. And it’s not just cricket either,it’s also a social thing. The maidens had their pre-season social event on Friday at ‘Oscar’s Bar and Kitchen’, in Clausen – drinks, dinner, a quiz and a lot of smiles. Friends and teammates competed against each other for the occasion, and the lucky winners of a bottle of crémant were Paula, Kerry, Wayne and Ross.
The event, put together by Natasha from ‘Liati Events’, marked the start of the cricket season and was a good opportunity for the team members to catch up and talk about forthcoming matches. The social evening was initiated by OMCC chairwoman Vicci Jenkins.
“We had a great night out to mark the start of the season. I joined OMCC in 2013 with no cricket experience apart from playing in the street with the other kids till I was about 10 years old. Any ladies who are interested in giving cricket a try are welcome to come along and join in – no previous experience necessary!”, Vicci explained, adding: “We often have friendly matches against local teams and companies followed by a BBQ. This year we’ve also been invited to take part in a 6-aside tournament being held in Brussels with teams from a number of countries.”
The OMCC team is made up of members from various countries and ages. Girls under 16 should play with the Juniors until they are at least 14 years old – then they can play for either team locally, but can only play international matches for the Maidens after their 16th birthday.
