Lëtz Create – Nathalie Siebenaler

Miranda van den Heuvel talks to creative people in Luxembourg and says “look, Luxembourg is creative! Here’s how and where!” The June talk is with designer Nathalie Siebenaler.

1. What is CREATIVITY?

Creativity can be everything. Our everyday life is surrounded by beautiful and not so beautiful things, but we have to open our eyes and learn to look again around us and be aware of the wonderful things in life. We are so busy and stressed with our work and private life, that we sometimes forget to take a break and really look at our surroundings. Creativity is finding solutions to problems. It is how we express and interpret what inspires us, and what we see and feel in a given situation.

2. How are you creative?

In 2011 I started my first small collection of limited edition digital printed scarves. My creative practice is often to take pictures of everything I see and consider interesting; flowers, stones, old walls, even things which seem ugly at first impression. Back home I analyze the pictures for interesting details I can use in my patterns and combine them with other ideas from drawings or illustrations. Then I combine them digitally on the computer and experiment with colours and shapes. Each design is digitally printed on high quality fabrics such as silk or cotton and then transformed into beautiful scarves.

I have worked for different companies as a freelance modiste, but now I finally took the decision to focus on made to measure wedding dresses and other dresses. I like to translate patterns into beautiful dresses, and I love doing made to measure dresses, because each person I do a dress for inspires me to create something unique for a unique person.

I want to inspire people, add fantasy to a busy lifestyle, and refresh the mind and spirit.

3.  Suggest a simple creative activity to our readers that can make them more creative

Don’t have a fixed idea about who you have to be or what you have to do to be creative. Just let yourself be inspired and led by anything you see or feel, and what you find interesting for yourself. Everyone has different sources of inspiration, you just have to be curious and discover them for yourself. Talk with people you don’t know, visit new places. Be open-minded and interested in new things.

4. What are your top 3 websites for creative inspiration?

instagram.com – a great platform to get inspired and to share your own inspirations. You can connect with a lot of different people and see what inspires them. I also like to share my ideas on instagram because you can reach a lot of people.

www.pinterest.com – another great platform to find inspiring photos and ideas on anything from design, illustrations and interiors to food and recipes.

www.monoqi.com – a platform where independent designers can sell their artwork. It’s inspiring to see the creativity of other People.

5. What are your 3 tips to become more creative in Luxembourg?

I love to take long walks in „Petite Suisse“, Müllerthal, discovering the nature around me and taking pictures of interesting stuff. Walking keeps you fit, but it’s also great to clear your head and get rid of stress. After a walk you are much more relaxed to start with new ideas.

Visiting inspiring exhibitions, for example at Mudam, is great too, as well as participating in workshops and meeting other interesting people by whom you can get inspired.

Also visiting art markets such as Let’z Go Local which are organized more and more often in Luxembourg city and also in villages all over Luxembourg. It’s important to meet other creative people to exchange ideas and support each other. To be creative it’s important that you feel good in your surroundings.

6. What’s your suggestion to make Luxembourg a more creative, innovative place?

I think the past few years have seen a lot of progress, demonstrating that Luxembourg has it’s creative places too, and especially creative platforms for local designers and events for creative people, such as Let’z Go Local and Hubdot. We need these creative spaces for all kinds of people to meet, discover and exchange.

Social events can help new start-ups and designers to keep believing in their idea and to continue on their path. We have to move on and continue to do as much as we can to support each other in our creativity and let the people around us know that there is a lot of creativity and creative people in Luxembourg.

7. Anything you’d like to add?

Often the easiest and simplest things or situations in life make us the happiest, we just have to be aware of it.
